I met Walter in October 2000 at the end of my physical therapy clinical affiliation
at a hospital in Massachusetts. I had dated a guy throughout high school and college, and when I graduated in May of
2000, it suddenly struck me how we had barely anything in common anymore. I was really into going out partying, dancing,
being "seen," and I wanted someone who could keep up or at least who I felt understood me better. The guy I was with
was younger, a professional musician, with a heart of gold, but preoccupied by his music and gave me a little TOO much room.
I broke it off with him with no regrets except that it could have been on better terms.
I started going out that summer, met a great guy who I really clicked with, had
a brief fling with him, and then moved on to my affiliation in MA. I spent those fall months going out as amuch
as possible, meeting different people, when suddenly I met Walter. On the surface, we don't seem to have much in common.
He's black, I'm white. He's from the city, I'm from a small town with many cows. He's a little edgy, I'm only
edgy in my imagination. He 's street-wise, I'm the most gullible person on the planet. He's relaxed and easygoing,
I am more intense and driven.
So many differences, but from that first meeting, my French connection "Undress
me and cover me in peanut butter" (what can I say, I'm a peanut butter fan!) shirt called out to him and his ease, humor,
and friendliness called out to me. So, the rest is history. We met, started dating soon after, we moved in
together a year and a half later, and we are now awaiting the moo-la to make a wedding happen.
His son is another story...DeShaun is the product of first love- between Walter
and D's mom back when Walt was 20. Walt introduced me to him about a year after we started dating due to some problems
he was having with custody arrangements. He's a great kid- good when he should be good, mischievious often, but full
of life and very loving. He's made me into a makeshift mom way before I thought to be, but its been the best experience
ever.
